I’m still working out some of the plot points, but the prequel takes place in 1983, four years before Finding Ecstasy. Danya is struggling between attending middle school during the day and hot-wiring cars at night. As a penalty for running away from home, his father sets a debt that seems impossible to clear. Then he learns about a rare European import parked near his father’s club. The car is worth enough money to get him out of debt and free his time so he can compete in the upcoming maths Olympiad.

But there’s a reason that car has been left unlocked.
